My favorite animal fact is one I learned from my 10 year old granddaughter, Molly. She did a report on dolphins and I discovered , in helping her, that the navy has trained dolphins since World War II. The dolphins are trained to seek out mines and drop a buoy there so it will identify where the mine is. This is under the Navy Mammal Protection Program and it is based in San Diego, California. The Navy also used the dolphins during the two Gulf Wars. I thought that was almost unbelievable when I read it. I knew dolphins were smart but how smart is that?

  • ramadevi

My favorite animals are leopards. They are mostly solitary animals until the female enters estrus (heat). Then for the next 4-7 days the male and female will remain together mating every 15-30 minutes up to 100 times. After that both cats go their separate ways and won’t acknowledge each other until the next cycle.

  • Diane Krumenaker Eugenio

I used to have a snake. As a snake grows, it sheds its skin. My snake used to leave a whole, intact dried up skin in the tank each time it shed. I remember saving one and hanging it up just because it was so fascinating to me.

Many white animals with blue eyes are deaf. Sometimes just one white ear and/or blue eye is enough, but not all of them are like that. My Sugar is an all white cat with blues eyes, hears every little thing! Many redhead or orange cats are boys, just like many calicos are female, but again, not all. No, redhead girls or calico boys are not more valuable, just rare!

  • TedtheRabbi

The ratio of insect species to all other species in the animal kingdom is ten to one. I don’t know the actual numbers, but let’s say there are one million different kinds, or species, of animals — including humans, cats, dogs, birds, fish, worms, lions, tigers, and bears ..oh my! — then, there would be ten million different species of insects. Only a small fraction of insect species have been named and classified. So, if you are looking for a career — think entomologist!

    cardinal Nesting
If you are interested in observing cardinals, they are often found near bird feeders, so you may want to install one in your yard. Since cardinals do not stay in the same nest twice, and you desire the cardinals to remain, you may wish to provide some shelter and nest building materials.

I was told by one riding instructor that a horse is much like an antenna when it comes to the rider’s emotions. I had many experiences over my riding “career” to learn how true that was but one night in particular comes to mind. One December night, I was part of a group lesson in an arena. There were 5 mounted riders and our instructor was walking. There was a jump set up in the middle of the arena and a barrel ( the kind used in barrel racing) set up in each corner. My horse and I were standing still next to the instructor and the others were trotting around the inside perimeter of the arena. Then the lights went out. There were no back up lights. It was pitch black in there. My instructor called out for everyone to stop their horses and to answer back when they had done so. Raven, my mare, started to hop and do little nervous bucks. I was terrified as I knew just how close we were to my instructor and how in danger she and I were with a frightened horse. My first thought was to get off the horse but I realized just as quickly that it was my job to get control of Raven. A loose, scared horse could have caused a disaster. I took a deep breathe and willed my own fear away. The response from Raven was amazing. I literally , very literally, felt my own calm move from me to Raven. She quieted right down and stood stock still. She sighed and lowered her head. A horse that is frightened does not lower it’s head. Raven stayed quiet with me while the others exited the arena with only the light of someone’s cell phone by the exit door to the stalls. Horse people will understand what a profound experience it can be to have such a bonding moment with a horse.

  • Jodi Laporte

Owls regurgitate pellets of parts that can’t be digested, such as the exoskeletons of insects, indigestible plant matter, bones, fur, feathers, bills, claws, and teeth. They swallow their food whole and their bodies get rid of any parts that are indigestible. Fascinating!
